Saturday Blahs...

This kind of sums up how I am feeling right now. If I were to think about it, I probably would say it is the case much of the time. So I am taking a poll. How many people talk to themselves? And how does that train of thought go? Not meant to sound like complaining; it's just that occasionally my positive nature tends to crash on weekends. And I get more introspective. Oh well, life goes on. And that's a good thing. So...what's happening???

Score!!! And the've tied the game. I've got my headphones on...I'm listening to my son broadcast a play-by-play hockey game streaming online [on my computer]from Alabama, and it is a high scoring game with the 3rd quarter being quite the roller coaster of lead changes! It is 5-5 with one minute left! And, yes...we are going into overtime! You can hear the enthusiasm in Jer's voice. He absolutely loves what he is doing!! It is fun to hear him start to talk faster and faster as the action starts to get in front of the net. And when someone takes a shot...oh my God!!! Well, it is going to end in a tie. Better than a loss.

Flo is watching Funniest Home Videos, and now I am going to prepare some supper! TTFN

So, do you talk to yourself?

What the heck?

I don't really understand our political system and/or I think that it is clearly broken. Why is it that our government officials vote right down party lines? Aren't they supposed to read the proposed bill, and vote on its contents? What is the problem? How will anything get accomplished ? And why do all the add-ons keep on appearing in the proposed bill...like bridges, swimmimg pools, and birth control? What a mess!
Tens of thousands of people are losing their jobs, and many have lost their pensions to greedy CEO's who are purchasing $50 million dollar jets and $1600 waste baskets after being rescued by a $35 billion dollar bailout...money that went where??? unaccounted for...CEOs who gave out bonuses that were huge...A CEO who mailed out millions of dollars of gifts...Exactly how does one man cheat people out of $50 billion without anyone noticing?? They should be wearing masks!! Why aren't these guys in jail???They should be doing community service in soup kitchens and homeless shelters. And why is there a radio talk show host[whose name I won't even say] making $100 million dollars a year to stir up controversy and publicly hope for our new president to fail...what major in college prepared him for that powerful job?
These people are a part of the problem.

I just don't get it.

When you are up to your ass in alligators, it is difficult to remind yourself that your initial objective was to drain the swamp.

This has got to stop!

Last night...actually the wee hours of the morning...my cell phone made the 'incoming text message' sound. It was 2:27 AM and when I opened the phone to check it out, it was an automated message! This is about the third time that I have gotten a text from the unknown. This last one had an email address, and when I called Sprint to ask for the phone number to stop these calls, they told me to go to the email address and have them remove my phone number. I typed in the email address, and it doesn't go through. I get, "Please check the spelling..."

Today I got a text message from Empower Federal Credit Union with
some kind of a security warning: unusual activity... call 1 866 ...I called to say 'What the ??" and it is always busy. I have no account with their credit union. Does anyone know the 'Take me off the unsolicited call list' phone number? Any suggestions?

Make someone happy...make just one someone happy!

Sometimes life is a 'cause and effect scenario' that is very predictable. For example, at 5AM when I got up to go to the bathroom, I knew that I'd have to be noiseless so that the cat[ who is banned from the bedroom while sleeping is in progress] wouldn't hear me and immediately deem it...morning!!! Meow...Feed me...now. Scout, stealth cat who rules, did indeed hear me, but I ignored her and went back to bed for a bit. Advantage: Me

At 7:30 I entered the dining room to find 3 places where she had thrown up dry dog food that she probably ate at 5AM ...Advantage: Scout
Scout has a way of making her point by scratching the rug, rearranging plastic bags, annoying the dog, speaking her loud cat talk, etc. until you concede and feed her. Then, after her morning breakfast, she assumes her place on the bottom of my bed for a long winter's nap.

Now my morning includes cleaning up the cat's walking trail, feed the animals, brew some coffee, fire up the computer, open the shade on the picture window, and...wait..what do I see?

A lone deer was laying down in front of a pine tree in my next door neighbor's backyard. My mom spends her waking hours trying to spot deer, and here was one just kinda hanging out and close enough to watch. So, I grab Flo's chariot[ wheelchair], arrive at her bedside, and say to the sleeping 97 year old snoring legend,"Mom, there's a deer out front. Do you want to see it?

Instantly, those blue eyes fly open and she mumbles, "There is...really?"

"Well, yeah!! Would I wake you up and then say, 'just kidding!!!' Want to get up?"
"Oh yes!!!"
So, I bring Mom out to the living room and place her in direct line with the deer, her rosary beads still dangling from her [good] hand. While she watched the main attraction, I got my coffee and her hot chocolate[whipped cream on top] . Gracie[ Flo's 4 legged best friend] jumped up in her lap, tissues by her side, and all was well with the world!!! But wait...it got better! As Deer#1 stood up and began grooming itself, Deer#2 appeared from the creek. And the two of them seemed to know each other!! Then, as they began the trek alongside the creek but in the direction away from us...Deer#3 and Deer#4 joined them. Wahoo! Four of them!!! It was great! Flo was so happy and thanked me for getting her up ! Life is good. And it certainly helped me forget the cat's indiscretion, too!

Twinkle, twinkle little star...how I wonder what you are!!!

As I parked my car in the garage, a commercial came on the radio advertising an event at a local planetarium. It stated that the program would start with the unveiling of the evening sky along with a discussion of the constellations a la 'what's what', so-to-speak. Immediately, I was reminded of the field trips to the planetarium where I accompanied my classes both in NY as well as NJ [at the beginning of my teaching career]. From my NJ Planetarium trip, I can recall the very abrupt ending as I heard my name being called at the same time that a hand gripped my arm. My unpredictable student was seated in close proximity [ right next to me], and I guess that in the total darkness...that I maybe had closed my eyes for a second...brought back to consciousness by Harrison yelling, "Ms C...Ms C! The room is spinning! The room is spinning very fast!! Well, not really, it wasn't... the sky was flying by in the making of the overnight sky turn into the day sky.
In NY, it was a yearly event regardless of what grade you taught because we had a planetarium twenty minutes away. I'm not sure exactly when my aversion to all of this started, but I would guess it was in college. I had to take astronomy to be an elementary school teacher, and it was more than recognizing the constellations. Two tests and a final that counted 50% of your grade. I failed the first test, I failed the second test, and the final was my last hope of getting a D[unfamiliar to me, but passing]. I failed the final. I had to retake the course because it was a requirement. The 2nd time was a night class and when the professor announced that she was the editor for the Encyclopedia Britannica, I thought, "I'm in hell!!" I did manage to pass the second time... the only course that I ever failed!!!

Back to the planetarium, at some point in time, I really came to question...no, doubt...I mean that my inner voice was saying,"Are they serious about this constellation stuff?" Aside from the Big Dipper and Little Dipper which are easily recognizable, I think that the rest of them are quite the stretch of the imagination!! My theory is that ...after either one too many' mind -altering drinks or 'mind- altering drugs', the stars in the night sky began taking shape. And one misperception led to another and soon...all kinds of wild things began to take shape. Take Orion as an example: Are ya kidding me? Orion? And his dog is where? And the seven sisters are over there???These sky gazers probably were the actual inventors of the "Rorschach tests!! What I really can't grasp is how these hallucinations caught on enough to make it into a science curriculum. I never raised these questions or shared my opinions with my students. I went along with the program. But I have to ask: Does anyone else believe the 'connect the dots' constellation maps? If so, let me know because...[you knew this was coming.]..I have some land in Florida for sale...cheap!!

The Russians Are Coming!! The Russians Are Coming!

Okay, I am currently in a bit of a funk. I have double clicked on 'New Post' a dozen times in the last three days, and nothing seems very interesting to share with anyone. So, I will go back into my memory bank, and tell another [true]story from 'the vault'!!

As a kid, every year we went to the Jersey shore for a week to my Great Aunt Emma's house. She lived 2 blocks from the beach and my grandparents lived there for the summer. We'd go to the beach, make sand castles, play miniature golf, walk on the boardwalk, and feed the ducks. When it rained, sometimes we would go to the movies for something to do. I remember that I was thirteen when we saw 'Days of Wine and Roses', but mostly because it was raining and Mom and I were huddled together under the umbrella on the inside of the theater. [Must've needed a new roof, or something!]
Fast forward a couple of years, and impromptu plans were being made to go to the movies. Mom asked what it was that we were going to see, and we told her the movie's name was 'The Russians Are Coming'. We invited her to join us, 'cause Flo had always enjoyed going to the movies.

"Not interested" she said.
"Why not?"

"It doesn't sound like something that I'd enjoy. I like comedies and drama, but not foreign movies."

"The Russians Are Coming' is a comedy, and it has gotten great reviews!! Come on...it'll surprise you. You'll like it!"

"Well," she said while mumbling something under her breath. "I don't think that I'm going to like it. How could a movie about Russians be very good?"

"Well, let's go and find out!! You're not going to stay home because you think you won't like it when you really don't know much about it, are you?"

"The Russians Are Coming really doesn't sound very appealing to me. But, if it will make you happy, I'll go!"

We went to see that 'darned Russian movie'. We had popcorn, and we laughed, and we laughed some more, and the time flew by...Why?

Because it was funny! Even though it was about those Russians!!

On the way home, Flo was forced to admit that she was glad that she had gone, and'yes' it was a good movie.

That was in 1966, and now that movie is among those life experiences that have lived on and referenced when needed. Any time that Flo prejudges anything...whether it's a movie or a food that she has never tried...all I have to say is:

"Flo, The Russians Are Coming!" and she knows exactly what it means.
Try it...you might like it!!

O happy day!

When I think about the time, effort, patience, and tenacity that went into today's most historic event, I amazed at...

where we are today, as a nation.
the magnitude of difficulty which faces this new president on Day 1...
the amount of self sacrifice involved in order to assume the leadership
the support of his wife as this monumental change is about to affect absolutely everything in their daily lives...
So, God bless you, Barack, and good luck to you, too.
And thank you for stepping up to the plate when things were looking pretty bleak on so-o many fronts. May the force be with you.

And a good time was had by all.

On Saturday, I went to my son's house and had a grand time. It's always great to hug him as well as get hugs from my grandpup, the 'Hank'ster[the very lovable ADHD dog!]. And one of the best parts was that I finally got to meet his girlfriend-a wonderful person...my son is a lucky guy!! Both of us elementary kid teachers, it was easy to get to know her.

First we grabbed a bite to eat at a local place where my eggplant was the best that I have ever had at a restaurant. And the three of us shared two desserts that were indescribably fantastic!

Off to the theater where Jer had gotten tickets to 'the musical RENT' as a Christmas gift. A good show. I didn't realize [beforehand] that the entire show was sung and so you really had to pay attention. My last show was 'WICKED' and it will be tough to find a show as fantastic as that! It's almost like comparing apples to oranges- in respect to musical theater.
And then I had to hit the road to get back home to Mom. It was two and a half hours of snow, wind, and dark Thruway driving always on the lookout for a possible deer 'encounter' . Parking the car in the garage was followed by the customary,'WHEW'. and a deep sigh of relief.

Yesterday, I was pooped. It was a good thing that I didn't have anything that I had to do, and I could spend a lazy Sunday resting. Except for the fact that I logged many hours trying to get my computer to recognize my IPOD. One day everything was working fine, and the next day...nothing! Oh well. My day trip took a lot of energy out of me, but so-o-o worth it. And I was majorly in need of some 'fun'.

Wednesday, January 14, 2009

So I sez to myself, "self! ...today's the day!"

With temperatures plummeting into single digits and below[zero], it became plainly obvious that I should stay home and be productive ...maybe get a grip on...the perfect storm...of ...CLUTTER!

When I went to get Flo out of the nursing home in NJ, I had most everything ready for us to meet the challenge. What I didn't realize was the amount of paperwork that would follow her. Yikes!! And my brother [God bless him] mails me copies of whatever he's done on her behalf[POA}. There's Medicare, secondary insurance info, doctor receipts, lottery tickets[hehe], tax info, receipts, calendars, blah, blah, blah.
I reached a point that everything was funneled into a big box labeled: FLO. If the IRS or Medicare wants any of the records, I'll just hand 'em the box and say, "Just like Prego...it's in there!
Tomorrow I am going to stick my finger in the dyke and stop the endless flow of paperwork. What does that mean? I'm going to respectively request that my brother retain custody of at least half of the paperwork!!! I do not want any more copies of anything!!
And then there's my stuff. My accumulated 'neat things'. I made a serious dent in hiding...[I mean organizing] the treasures that I find fascinating and I'm not exactly sure what I will do with it. Yet. I'm okay with that. I may have to get those things that raise my bed up to accommodate my organizational solution. But then, I may need to stand on a step ladder to climb into bed!! Just kidding!! Kidding!!
So, things are lookin' better. I'm working on it. Rome wasn't built in a day. And just like the diet thing, I could write the book on how to keep it from happening again. But it will happen again. And in the great big scheme of things, it's small stuff. So, how 'bout those Mets?
[Oct 4 post if you don't get, "How 'bout those Mets?"]

Aches, obsessions, and mindless winter distraction.

I ache, therefore I am!!
Well there certainly is a big weather change coming up. If you are not sure you believe it, I am here to tell you that,'yep, yep, it's a happening thing!" I guess that it is going to go to sub zero temperatures in a couple of days. As long as there is no bad weather on Saturday, I'll deal with being 'the tin woman' whilst it changes. I am going to see the musical,"RENT" with my son and his girlfriend. I am very excited about my daytrip.

In writing the post '10 things' about me, I mentioned my Backgammon and Hearts skills. I have not played either one in quite a while since you need a partner or more for these games. I have quite a Solitaire streak going on the computer, and I decided to explore what else was lurking in the laptop!!. I found both games!! OMG!!! I am already seriously into the hearts game[playing 3 contestants] and I will probably have to call my doctor for some blood pressure medicine!!![just kidding]. I hate to lose.

American Idol starts tomorrow, and that definitely makes my mom happy. It helps to pass the winter months and we realize that it is not rocket science. It is what it is. There will be several weeks of auditions that could make you crazy. But when it gets to the final 12 contestants, that's when a little bit of gamblin' goes on! Until then, you can find me playing hearts and 'shooting the moon' and 'stalking that queen of spades' all the while sharpening my strategerie!![That's a George W word...bye bye George.]

A star-studded distraction from the real world...

It's the annual Golden Globe Awards, and I am sitting here watching the red carpet coverage[ the only thing that is covered]. It always fascinates me how the people act and dress. A good friend of mine will be calling me with a "mammory glands alert", 'cause many of the stars appear to have on a half of a dress.
Although if we compare tonight's outfits to those worn in the 'Dancing with the Stars' competition, well...there is no comparison. Signing off for tonight. Tomorrow starts a new week.

Ten things about me!

Okay, it's time to do this. In a random order [even though I know which one of these will have you saying,"Really!!??"], here are my ten things that you probably wouldn't know about me:

1. I can be a procrastinator, which is why it has taken me this long to compose this list. I used to think that I worked best under pressure...but now I think that's just what I wanted to think. I can recall[once] finishing the written comments on report cards as the buses were about to be called! I do, however, get things done. And as random abstract as I am, despite how things may look, I pretty much know where everything is!! Heck, if everyone did things exactly the same...life would be boring.
Oops...I said the "B" word. The kids in my classroom knew not to say the "B" word! {boring, not that other "B" word.]

2. Speaking of 'b' words, I can be quite the competitive person. One of my favorite games is backgammon. Backgammon is 50%luck [dice are involved] and 50% skill [knowing how to strategically move] . I entered a double elimination tournament many years ago, and after I lost 1 game, I managed to fight my way to be the winner of the loser's bracket. Onward!! I pursued the first place award by challenging the winner of the winner's bracket. I had to beat him twice since he had not lost a game. He lost a game...but not 2 games. I took second. I used to teach my students how to play this game, and held tournaments in school. Good fun...and problem solving thinking.

Another confession would be that I am a cut-throat hearts player. And darn good at it! The other three hearts regular players [of our foursome] also thought they were the best. To the point that we began saving the score sheets in a 'tin saltine cracker can' and at the end of the year, we crowned the champion hearts player. A custom tee shirt was made announcing it to all exactly who was the grand winner when the chant went up to,"Count the can!!"

3. I am a card carrying leftie, which of course means that I am in my right mind, and generally see things from a different perspective than many, many of you folks. One year I even organized a ' southpaw 'tee shirt purchase in school for staff lefties!!!Just trying to raise awareness! An unusual talent is my ability to be fluent in writing backwards... and from the right side of the paper to the left side. Creative ideas come easily to me as well as ways to associate things in an effort to remember them.[like in plotting a point on a graph...{3,8 } which way do you go first: vertically or horizontally...I would tell the kids that you crawled across the floor before you stood up , so 'horizon'tal first and then vertical. I must have a million associations in my head!!

Probably tied right in with the 'leftie' thing is....

4. I am 'rainwoman' with phone numbers! It is like the equivalent of having a rolodex stored in my head. And the same is true for songs. It is an involuntary reflex[like breathing or blinking] that when I hear a word...it will prompt a song...and I can burst into song quite easily. It isn't easy to squelch a song, and I've been known to change the lyrics to popular songs and sing my own 'topic of conversation'.
To quote a Four Tops song..."Can't Help Myself"

5. Here's an interesting fact. I do not own a scale. At some point in my life, I decided that it had a negative effect on my persona. I have also given up dieting forever. I have lost and regained the same thirty pounds five times. Let's see: Weight Watchers, Diet Workshop, a Hypnotist, a Nutritionist, and the Atkins Diet[which, by the way, after day12 of no carbs...I wanted to dive into a bowl of macaroni salad face first!] I now accept that whenever my body thinks a 'diet' is on the menu...it just is counter productive. I'm over it. Would I like to weigh thirty pounds lighter? Sure...and yet I accept the fact that...

6. I have a confession to make...I have never made ...sauce...or canned anything...or made jam... or jelly. I can remember the fallen faces and wide-eyed reactions of my colleagues at the lunch table when I nonchalantly shared that I had never made sauce. What? Really. I felt unamerican! My sauce looks like this:

7. Okay, hold onto your hat!

The appliance to the left...well...it left my kitchen. That's right. At this point in my life, I do not own a stove. Oh how I wish that I could see your face as this concept sinks in!! Usually, it's predictably priceless!! A couple of years ago, I realized that I really didn't cook as much as in my former life. 'The Joy of Cooking ' lost its appeal to me. And the stove was taking up space that I could better utilize in my kitchen. I do have a microwave, toaster oven, crockpot, electric fry pan, electric water pitcher thing, etc. When Jer went to college, cooking for one was no fun. I have really only missed it once. Flo and I eat good food. There are meat, potatoes, pasta, vegetables, etc in our menus. It seems that my microwave is what I couldn't live without! And there might be a stove in my future sometime...it's just not there now.

8. I love to shop and find a bargain. I love to find unique and different things. For me, I do not have to know exactly what I am going to do with my 'find' or to whom I will give it to or when. This concept is foreign to some people who have to follow a plan. I can operate in the 'fly by the seat of my pants' mode quite easily and often things will fall into place for me. Occasionally, I've been known to orchestrate a practical joke or two, and having random things available helps this cause. I am Lucy.

9. I love, love, love to drive a stick shift car! Now it's a very rare occasion that I still get to drive one, and yet I find it should be on my list of 10. At one time, I remember trying to teach my mom how to do it, but a slight hill with a stop sign at the top ended that experience! I think that cars handle better in snow since you can downshift instead of stepping on the brake. But truth be told...for me, it is fun. In my next life, I'll be purchasing one...with a sunroof...and singing along with the radio...and having a grand old time. And there will be NO ROADMAP aboard...hate 'em...mental block about them!!

10. I am a big time animal lover. Whenever we had assemblies where animals were brought in, I would be more fascinated than the kids. I enjoy learning about the endless variety and specialty of Mother Nature's unique and awesome menagerie. Being an environmentalist at heart, I have a respect for the animal kingdom. I find it all so amazing. But then again, I am one who stops to smell the roses and can see the wonder in things. I'm thankful for this gift.

I am an eclectic kind of person who really wishes people would act kinder.
And there you have it!! I won't ask what surprises you most because I already know which one would win!!!

Do you hear what I hear?

As I sit in my living room, I am aware of many sounds - most of them are familiar ones. I recognize the feeding birds chirping a 'thank ya', the 'beep-beep-beep' of a backing up salt truck, etc. Now that it is winter and the temperature/snow/ice are in constant states of flux, nature's noise repertoire includes a "thud" that brings back a memory of a winter long ago.

It was about a year after my ten year old son and I had moved into our little house. It was a cold, snowy, windy night and we were wrapping up another day's activities with warm thoughts of rest and sleep . Jer's bedroom was diagonally across the hall from mine, and after the routine of him yelling out,"I love you!" and me answering with,"You are very special to me!", I rested my head on the pillow and thought 'Ahhhh'. Teaching elementary school kids, managing my newly diagnosed rheumatoid arthritis, and being the single 'head of household' were the exhausting realities of my life. [Not complaining...just the facts.]

So, when the giant...THUD... happened, followed by my son's raised voice saying,

"Did you hear that?"

I quickly began thinking of what I would say to sound calm and matter of fact while hoping that I didn't have to get up.

"That was snow falling off of the tree limbs and landing on the roof. The wind is pretty strong. Love you...Good niigghht!" I had decided that whatever it was probably wouldn't be the least , bit phased by me. [Ya know how you think of playing dead, and it turns out allright. Well, I was going to play 'asleep' and hope for the best. In reality, I would most likely wait until Jer was asleep and then check it out. Otherwise you can just picture the two of us ...me and my shadow...tiptoeing from window to window? Pretty much scaring each other!!

Then I heard his loudest, "MOM...COME HERE...A TREE JUST HIT MY BEDROOM!"
Out of my bed and into his room, and we both looked out the window at the big, snowy, locust tree laying on the ground. The locust tree group[one of a family of five] was right outside his bedroom window and he used to complain about them because they 'creaked' and it sounded like moaning. My reply was that you didn't cut down a tree because it creaked!

Well, it wasn't creaking anymore...it was down for the count!
And since a 'creak' became a 'thud'...guess how many of the four locusts are left?

I was told that they had relatively shallow roots, and were not a particularly reliable tree.
So, what did I want? Four more "THUDS" or "ZZZ-z-zz-!"
There are no more freaking...I mean... 'creaking' locust trees right outside that window.
Just...ZZZ-ZZZ-z. Ahhh-hh-h

Not sure how this one started!

Well, I stood in the doorway and waved the white hankie as my brother began his roadtrip back to the Jersey shore. Somewhere in our family history, the tradition of standing at the door and waving the white hankie became a tradition. Often times, you will see a tissue become visible out of the car's window as a kind of 'kindred spiritedness.' I don't know how or when or who started it, but it is definitely here to stay.

I packed him a goodie bag to eat along the way, and Flo and I will be awaiting the word that he is home safely. It is about a 5-6 hour ride, and once you are on the road it's not so bad, but the anticipation of that long ride is like a grey cloud hangin' in the picture.

My son is on the road, too. He is traveling with the hockey team and will be riding the bus home with them overnight. It's always a worry when family and friends are traveling.

Paul is responsible for coining the phrase, "Hurray for January 2nd!" I totally understand it, and now that the 'holidaze' are behind us, things will settle down and return to 'normal'.[whatever that is!] About the New Year, I say bring it on! And I hope it's a good one for everyone.
