The Russians Are Coming!! The Russians Are Coming!

Okay, I am currently in a bit of a funk. I have double clicked on 'New Post' a dozen times in the last three days, and nothing seems very interesting to share with anyone. So, I will go back into my memory bank, and tell another [true]story from 'the vault'!!

As a kid, every year we went to the Jersey shore for a week to my Great Aunt Emma's house. She lived 2 blocks from the beach and my grandparents lived there for the summer. We'd go to the beach, make sand castles, play miniature golf, walk on the boardwalk, and feed the ducks. When it rained, sometimes we would go to the movies for something to do. I remember that I was thirteen when we saw 'Days of Wine and Roses', but mostly because it was raining and Mom and I were huddled together under the umbrella on the inside of the theater. [Must've needed a new roof, or something!]
Fast forward a couple of years, and impromptu plans were being made to go to the movies. Mom asked what it was that we were going to see, and we told her the movie's name was 'The Russians Are Coming'. We invited her to join us, 'cause Flo had always enjoyed going to the movies.

"Not interested" she said.
"Why not?"

"It doesn't sound like something that I'd enjoy. I like comedies and drama, but not foreign movies."

"The Russians Are Coming' is a comedy, and it has gotten great reviews!! Come on...it'll surprise you. You'll like it!"

"Well," she said while mumbling something under her breath. "I don't think that I'm going to like it. How could a movie about Russians be very good?"

"Well, let's go and find out!! You're not going to stay home because you think you won't like it when you really don't know much about it, are you?"

"The Russians Are Coming really doesn't sound very appealing to me. But, if it will make you happy, I'll go!"

We went to see that 'darned Russian movie'. We had popcorn, and we laughed, and we laughed some more, and the time flew by...Why?

Because it was funny! Even though it was about those Russians!!

On the way home, Flo was forced to admit that she was glad that she had gone, and'yes' it was a good movie.

That was in 1966, and now that movie is among those life experiences that have lived on and referenced when needed. Any time that Flo prejudges anything...whether it's a movie or a food that she has never tried...all I have to say is:

"Flo, The Russians Are Coming!" and she knows exactly what it means.
Try it...you might like it!!

  • interesting post, each family has their little phrases that no one understands the meaning of...i'm trying to think of some of ours. one i laugh at now is ..."keep your eyes peeled." don't know where that came from.

  • Fun post! I do remember the movie and I remember laughing a lot. We could use more of those these days! Rain at Rainy Day Thoughts posted today about another funny movie, not that old but it was a good one called My Fellow Americans with James Garner and Jack Lemmon. Thanks for the giggle!

  • Your times at the beach must have been wonderful. I didn't even SEE the ocean until I was about 12 years old. Now I have to go there at least once each summer, more often if at all possible.
