Zoaring With Glinda

Well, no way I could've seen this one coming!

My mom, Flo, has been reinventing the time frame of when to have your 'eyes wide open' and when to impersonate 'Rip Van Winkle' and it is by no means conventional. As the antibiotic fights the current infection that she has, it's a toss up on a nightly basis for how much sleeping will be on the agenda.

So, last night, I'm hoping for the best, and trying to do everything I can to help the sleep process. The lights are out, the TV is off, and Mr. Sandman has been paged as a backup...ready and willing to lend a hand...I mean 'some sand!'
Fifteen minutes go by, and I'm thinking, "Whew!" when out of the darkness comes this voice that says:

"Mare, can I ask you just one question?"
"Sure" I answer thinking...Just when I thought it was safe to come out of the woods!!

Flo says:
"I am 97 years old; soon to be 98. Do you think that it's fair that I should be expected to wash and cut all of these vegetables? I don't think that it's right, and all I want to do is sit down. Someone else should be cutting up all of these...there's so much!!"
Huh?
To which I answered that she was already in bed lying down, and "Forget about that huge pile of vegetables! All's well. G'night Mom!"

perhaps next time I ask you to "string a few sentences together", you could hit me with one of those?

  • how funny...good it was only a dream but it did keep you awake. good luck with sleeping. try putting on some soothing music to listen to-that helps us concentrate on getting to sleep.

  • Funny that she knew how old she was but not where she was or what she was doing. Our minds do like to play tricks.

  • My mom does the same thing! She'll be talking to me and caring on like life is normal, then out of blue comes out with something like this. Two days ago while I visiting her, she said my sister said something to her and it upset her. She had asked my sister what she was doing and my sister replied,"cleaning up after you as usual."

Here's the reality, my sister was in Tulsa, while my mom is at the rehab center and never leaves. My sister hasn't seen my mother in months, but mom thinks some of time that sisters is in the next room.

She had a stroke and sometimes I think between the stroke and meds that she's on, it brings her to another place.

I feel for you, I really feel for you. You are an angel to have her in your home.

  • I have to take a lesson from you. My mother comes up with a few strange things and I have to stifle the irritation. I guess there's a part of me that's just scared that she'll end up with Alzheimers like my dad. I need to laugh it off like you. Thank you for that reminder.

My Mom also comes up with some LuLu's. She has a lot of conspiracy's going on in her head. She turned 91 today,I guess she's allowed!

  • It is amazing how many things go on in our brains. Most of us--under the age of 80--realize that it is not the same as what's going on in life, but it seems the edges get blurred. When my father was getting closer to death (he was only 79) he sometimes quipped about which life we were talking about--ours or the one had in his head.

Brains are always busy, and age and some medications can make the distinctions difficult.
