It's A.....Party!!!
Over the weekend, my son was invited to a couple's "It's a ...Party" celebrating the announcement of...'it's a boy' or 'it's a girl'.
The sonogram had produced an answer to...'What's it gonna be?'
Party goers were supposed to wear something pink or blue depending on what their guess was for the newborn star who will be joining the planet in February. What a great idea, and a joyous occasion!
I think there are two unwavering groups of expectant parents: those who definitely want to know, and those who are determined to be surprised.
Sometimes one parent to be wants to know, and the other one doesn't. I can't imagine I could keep a secret from my spouse because of my well defined 'poker face'...NOT! My face says it all. I am not a good liar.
Thirty years ago, the option wasn't there to find out. I'm thinking that I didn't have even one sonogram in all nine months. I do remember the first time I could hear Jer's heartbeat at an appointment. And when he was born, I can see his face, too, as he was placed beside me!
I wanted to call my mom in NJ at 5:30AM to tell her, and the hospital people thought I should wait. What?? Huh?
Well, anyway...if I had the choice of finding out ahead of time, my guess is that I would want to be surprised. In the celebrating and toasting at the party over the weekend, the announcement was made:
Inquiring minds want to know!!
Would you want to know?

Yeah, we couldn't find out back then. If we could have, I would have wanted to know. I'm a planner and love knowing what's coming. I have a grandson and a granddaughter coming in the fall and I love knowing ahead of time.

No sonogram for the 1st one so I was surprised when she was a girl. Sonogram and amniocentesis for the 2nd, and I did want to know but was disappointed it was another girl. Ah, well, both women have turned out well and we love them both!

I liked it better when we didn't have a way to know. It would be hard now to wait to find out.

Yes, I do believe I would want to know. My daughter refused. She and her husband wanted to be surprised. I was in the delivery room and when my son-in-law learned it was a daughter he gave a huge "whoop." He was so happy! Hmmmm... so maybe there's something to be said for not knowing.

Like you, the technology wasn't there when I had mine but I prefer the surprise element. Besides, the test isn't 100% accurate so the chance exists that one will be surprised anyway.
My son and his wife didn't want to know. Jen had a friend who decorated her nursery in pink after three boys and got a 4th one contrary to the test results.
