From the chorus of, "Hair! "
Yesterday, Flo and I were able to go to the 'hairdresser's place of magic and wizardry' thanks to a cancellation and help from our good friends. I was able to get the gray washed away followed by a haircut, while Mom got a perm and a haircut. I thought this sign from clip-art said it perfectly. We have been going t
o the same hairdresser for a long time. We used to kid Flo about visiting NY not to see her daughter or grandkid, but really it was to get a perm from Kathy! When you added in the airfare[ back when Flo flew}, we joked about how expensive her curly hair was in reality. Watching her face is proof enough that she's in heaven's vestibule when she is sitting with her eyes closed under the heat of the warm hairdryer. Her words were, "This is better than going to Europe, or anywhere else in the world!"

I haven't decided whether to color my hair when it turns grey. Right now, there are a few white hairs, but it still looks black in photos. I'm tempted to just let it turn white...

Well, I finally gave up, I couldn't keep up with the gray! I kept it colored as long as I was working -- I had found out earlier that companies are not inclined to hire gray-haired ladies! But once I retired, I let it go. I had to leave the best hairdresser in the world when I left Portland, he was the greatest. I haven't looked the same since -- damnit!!!

Ahh yes... the comforting massage of the shampoo, the warm water washing away the stress of the day as you lie back and let it flow through your hair. The gentle tug as nimble fingers at work snipping and styling, the soft white noise of the dryer as it sends warmth wafting through your freshly washed tendrils. It's definitely a luxurious treat to me when I can sit still long enough to have my hair professionally done. I generally just slap on some color and whack off any unruly tendrils myself. It's not the expense of having it professionally done... it's the time element. Silly, huh?
Well, come to think of it, when I do my own hair it sort of IS professionally done. I was a hairstylist for several years in a long ago prior life. It's just that doing your own hair is a little like doing someone elses blindfolded... and there isn;t any pampering involved.
Where are the pictures of the new you and Flo? All prettied up and no snapshots? Wha???

I agree with caryn-we want to see the results-sounds fun. I used to give myself my own perms and then decided I could afford to be pampered plus my arms got so tired trying to put in the curlers and keep them in. hurrah for hair salons.

What a name...Curl up & dye...cool! I'm giving up on coloring. I look at the many heads of beautiful white hair and think, "that is so pretty." I joked to the kids (and hubby) that I earned every grey hair and I want to show them off.

Aren't you going to take some photos and post them of your new do's?
I just cut my own hair yesterday. I think I've put a little "rat bite" (dent) on the side of my head. I'm afraid I can't color my hair because I'm too darn lazy to keep it up. I would perpetually have 5 inch roots showing.

There is nothing better than a great trip to the salon and nothing worse than a bad trip..I'm glad that you and Flo were able to have some beautification time...

Ain't it grand to get the grey washed away? And Caryn's description of the procedure is downright poetic. Makes me want to rush to my hairdresser.

I've been to that place with you and g-ma so many times, the story itself triggers the SMELL of those "perm chairs" in my nose...
