Decisions....
It was 5 years ago on April 15th that my mom had the stroke that was to change life as we knew it then. She has lived with me for four and a half years with the help of some pretty amazing, caring people. Flo's pleasant disposition [most of the time] and the fact that she knew when she needed a ride to the bathroom[ that in itself was majorly important] made the situation a good one.
Well, Flo crested that 100 year old hill and has developed a new pattern in life where she is awake for two days [that includes the night hours] and then crashes for a two day sleep [which includes the daytime hours]. I could manage the sleeping part, but the 48 hours of ' awake with an agenda' were taking their toll on everyone.
After realizing that this was happening quite regularly, the handwriting was definitely on the wall [and Flo often thought she saw writing on the wall!] I live by the message of The Serenity Prayer, and after accepting the things that I could not change, and I changed the things I could.. now I must acknowledge that last part which is...to have the wisdow to know the difference.
So, tomorrow 'Sweet Flo' as she was known on the third floor during the recent respit stay at a local nursing home is now checking in as a resident. Reality is hard to deal with sometimes. I remind myself that it is a change in arrangements and Gracie [ dog extraordinaire] and I will be visiting often with lots of hugs and kisses.
And there you have it.
Rip Van Winkle will be checking into a ' room at the inn', and I will be taking my turn at the Rip Van Winkle experience.
More stories to follow, I'm sure. After my long winter's nap.zzzzzz.

Yup, the only thing to say IS that it IS the right thing to do.
Blessing to you, Marianne.

You have been a caring, compassionate caregiver to your mother. That is to be admired. I appreciate that you were able to turn to The Serenity Prayer in helping you make your decision. There are some things we cannot change, others we can, and there is such wisdom in knowing the difference. Sending best wishes your way.

My hats off to you. I know some of the emotions involved in putting a mom in a care center. We all admire your dedication, love and service to your mom. At some point you have to take care of yourself or there is no well to draw from. Rest in peace knowing that you have done your best and are a wonderful example to all of us. Hugs-Lin

My sweet beautiful Auntie.... you have done such a wonderful job with Grandma, far beyond - in both time and quality - what anyone could have imagined possible. She, and we, are blessed to have had you and Saint Nic as her caregivers - you have enriched her last four 1/2 years with such love and tenderness. But her health and awareness scenario has changed in that timeframe, as has yours, and therefore her residential scenario must as well. No second-guessing that decision is necessary: she'll still have your love and tenderness no matter her residence, and now you'll have a chance to rest and relax enough that you'll be able to deliver that love and tenderness free of the the physical burdens and thus with lots of ADDITIONAL laughter, humor and smiles to make her every additional day most wonderful going forward.
You are an angel on earth, and I love you dearly. :-) xoxoxo Great job.

I remember clearly how painful this step is, but it's a necessary one. Your niece's words above will surely give you much comfort. I'm thinking of you.

I love you. Can't wait to see more of you!

I have walked this path, and while there will be a few "pebbles" to walk around, it is the best for both of you. Now take care of you Mare...love and admire you.

You did the best you could. I sometimes wonder if that will happen to my 96 yr old mother. Right now, my 59 yr old sister is her caregiver.
