Oops I Did It Again...

Last  Wednesday I made the conscious decision that I had to get out more and have more of a life.  Mom celebrated her 100th birthday, and we have the perfect caregiver to be with Flo when I am not here. There is no time like the present.
The next day I drove to see my favorite son and we had lunch together and took the Grandpup to the park to play.  Great fun to watch...lots of smiles involved in watching a dog playing with his/her owner.  No one loves you like your dog!  Then we left to have dinner with his significant other and family. The two hour drive home was sweetened by some homemade chocolate chip cookies.
On Friday I volunteered at the hospital for a couple of hours.  Saturday morning I had breakfast with a kindred spirit who also is caregiver to her 98 year old mom.  We made plans to go to the movies on Sunday at 3:30.
The longest journey begins with a single step.  So does the bathroom nonskid bathmat begin to move with a single step that propelled it across the floor and sent me airborn.
A crashlanding to the floor,  I just couldn't flippin' believe it.  It felt so similar to my fly through the air when I broke my leg two years ago.  Because of that experience, I have been super careful.  Really careful. Really super careful!!
So I am kind of angry.  I'm sitting on the couch with a cast on my right foot and a sore back. Reflecting back about my conscious decision to get out more......I'm now making a conscious decision to read more! And I am grateful that I didn't land on my head!
Count your blessings 'cause the direction you're heading in can change in a second.  And...lesson to be learned...'nonskid' is not set in cement...but my right foot is!!!

  • that's sad just when you were making the move to get out more. Well it will heal and I'm sure your mom will love having you around...read lots! Then you'll be ready to get out when the weather improves...lol!

  • Well, this is just awful!!! I hope you don't hurt yourself reading. Books can get heavy you know. I'm glad you had fun with #1 son first however! I'm also glad it was a non slip rug, because I was wondering about that, even though it still slipped. Missed you at lunch today. PA

  • Goodness! Hope you aren't in a lot of pain. It's great that you are able to get out and live your life. You will again, as soon as you heal. Flo would want you to do that. What a blessing to have a good caretaker for her when you need one. Good for you! And, be careful out there!

  • Oh, this is not good news. I am truly sorry. I hope you heal quickly and are literally back on your feet again soon.

  • Oh no...I can't believe it..Not again.. well I should say that I do believe it cause this kind of stuff happens in an instant...It isn't much help, but I do understand. I feel like I make attempts to get out more only to pick up a bug or fall. It's frustrating, but I think you are like me and my husband always tells me that I never give up and I always pick myself up again..and you will.. but this really bites badly... Yes reading is good. I've been reading some really interesting books some fiction, one family history by Lisa See about her Chinese family roots.. Good reads really. Oh Mare..Oh Mare... hugs...it sucks..it really really sucks....

  • Maybe number one son would like to get his Mom an e-reader..I love my Nook, but a Kindle is good too. The best thing is they aren't heavy and they can be propped up for arms that get tired and with Nook, you can take books out of the library....hugs again...

  • Oh good gosh, Mare! I can't believe it! Then again, I can. I've hurt myself too. I've always read that as we get older, we have to make all these safety precautions around the house because falls are the worst thing for seniors. I thought I'd be safe because I hardly ever hurt myself a decade ago. Not so anymore.

Please look around your house to see all the ways you might make it safer. I hate the thought of you being in a cast again. Please take care.

  • Oh no! Not again! Well, I'm glad you got to get out some before your crash landing put you back on the couch.
I hope the pain subsides soon. Then maybe it's time to call for some visitors to bring the outside world to you.

  • Really! Well you know who is ready for a good ole' fashion game or two of Backgammon. I'll call tomorrow to set up schedule. Is there anything I can do for you right now, tho? I'm free in afternoons.
