Flo admits to the "B" word!!

It's a Sunday, and for my mom and me, it seems like a longer day than the others. Maybe because the television programming is so different from the weekdays, the day drags a bit slower. Maybe because we feel like we should get out and do something, but there is so much flippin' snow...we can't even consider it.
Big picture window...not a deer to be seen.
I was playing hearts and scrabble on the computer, kind of semi-entertained.

The gold medal Olympic Hockey Championship game was on, but Flo sees it as very dangerous..."The hockey players are so fast on skates, and everyone has a big stick, and they crash into each other."

"How are you doing, Mom?"
"Fine. Everything's good." [Flo is not a complainer.]
"Are ya bored?"
"Well, if you are really asking...yes...I am bored! There is really not much to do. Not complaining though."
"I would certainly agree with you in this case...what's to do?"

I must admit that I was very surprised to hear those words from Flo.

As a kid, we were not supposed to say those words.."I'm bored!"

My brothers and I would get the answer..."Well, what are you going to do about it??"

Boredom is a state of mind. Take action and do something.

And so it became the "B" word.
And even as a teacher, the 'kid' in me kept that going.
The kids knew not to say the "B" word.
It was always fun to watch the other [than my] kids who were not in on our context of the word listen to someone say, "Mrs. W...So and So said the "B" word.
Eyes got as big as saucers!

And I'll bet you thought the 'B' word was something different!!
Fooled you!!

  • fun, I sure hear my grandkids use the B word all the time as they are surrounding with things to do plus books to read and me to visit with!!

  • I get annoyed with the way kids use the 'B' word. I don't remember being bored too often as a child -- there was always lots to do.

I'm not usually bored as an adult -- the project list is always full of things that beg my attention and there's always a stack of books hollering to be read not to mention writing.

The only time I feel bored is when I'm just annoyed with life -- the feeling that nothing I'm doing has value and that's not real boredom. It's just me being a cranky old woman.

  • LOL. I get bored a lot these days. And I even tell myself I am bored. Same old thing every day. Nothing ever changes.

Now and then, I do something interesting -- like the opera today or planning our trip to Hong Kong. But it's the time in between that's the killer. I wish I could kill time better.

  • I really disliked that B word, too. I do try my best not to get bored. If I do, there's always the toilet to clean.

  • Okay, I'll go with there's always another book to read rather than a toilet to clean!!!

  • I feel the same way about the B word. I think part of it now comes from the fact that with so much television, kids are used to being entertained. I'm afraid the ability to find something to do on their own has really slipped away.

Now you and Flo? I'll bet you found something to do pretty quickly.

I'm going to use your B word idea with my own grandkids...I like it.

  • You always told me that you to CHOOSE to be bored.

  • I used to tell my kids that if they were bored, I'd find them something to do. That always got them busy. Ha!

  • Teachers hate the B word, and know it usually is code for "I don't know how to do that". When I'm bored, I know it's my fault and only I can do something about it. But it does help to have a full range of options, and not be snowed in!
