Zoaring With Glinda

Monday...an eclectic post.

This morning on the news, it reported/analyzed the possible reasons that the plane crashed in Buffalo. At the point that they shared that when the plane had stalled in the air,... and then...something about auto pilot...I had a 'TMI' moment. While I knew about the auto pilot status [don't understand it at all], the part about the air plane stalling in the air and what pilots do in these situations,...well... I couldn't quite grasp it. I never knew that air planes stalled while flying, and I didn't need to know it either. It was too much information for me.

I started the day by meeting a friend for a quick breakfast at Mickey D's...I love their 'Egg Mc Muffins'!! We happened upon a table of former coworkers, and sat with them to catch up on what's been happening in their lives since retiring from the school district. And then, off to run some errands.

The Ladies Auxiliary at the hospital is sponsoring its yearly card party to raise money, this year to go for wooden bassinets in the newly reopened maternity ward. My job is raffle prizes[ donations by local businesses] and to buy the scratch off lottery tickets that would be raffled off as a lottery tree. I went to two different places and bought 36 scratch offs [$50]. We are also having a 50-50 drawing. And next we sell the tickets! Last year I think we raised $1500.

At home, I also have a couple of random 'draw a name' contests for Survivor, The Amazing Race, Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, and Celebrity Apprentice. Flo, who has probably won 4 times, really enjoys having this to look forward to at night. So, as I volunteered at the hospital desk, I addressed the envelopes to mail out that info to all who are participating. It keeps many family and friends in touch . Let me just say that I have never won.
All was going well until the moment when a woman arrived to check in and her perfume would have knocked you out. It was a very, very heavy smell that even hung around after she left. Dr Oz on Oprah says that you can't smell your own breath. Is it the same with your own perfume? Could it be that she was unaware of the powerful statement that her perfume shouted 'on her, around her, and after her' all the way to the room she was brought to for her procedure. It caused a reaction somewhere between a headache for me and a closing of the throat for a
fellow worker. Wow! I was happy to leave when my time was done.
Home. Some computer hearts and wordscraper.
Some chocolate.

  • Our local news is all about the crash. I wonder if the blame is going to be put on the pilot instead of the airline. Regarding the perfume, I try to stay with light with mine as I am sensitive to it, but I think it you wear the same one for a while then maybe you don't notice it..but it can give me symptoms like it did you Mare..

  • interesting about perfume-I have a strong reaction to others who overdose themselves with "good" smells. They are completely obnoxious and unaware of their scent. I have sometimes had to move to another place at a meeting in order to be able to breathe. It's sad about air travel...and dangers but even driving your car is more dangerous. Life continues...

  • This was fun! A day full of Mare's prismatic brain darts.

Like you, I don't want to know too much about how airplanes operate. I go to great extremes not to think about it if I have to fly anywhere.

Mickey D's... hmmmm... have to think about that one. Once every three years or so, I get a craving for a Big Mac. I'll purchase one and by the third bite I'm saying, "Oh yeah... I remember now. I really don't like these burgers." Never tried one of their breakfast sandwiches. May have to taste one some morning when I'm on my way to the office.

Congrats to the Ladies auxiliary. Good work!!!

My daughter almost always picks the winner of Dancing With the Stars. She usually picks the top two on American Idol. And she's been known to be a tad testy when her favorites don't take the trophy home. I pout when my guys don't win...sometimes for a couple of days.

Strong perfume... I wear Opium. I spray it from a distance and usually an hour or more before I leave the house. Even then, I worry. So many people have reactions to strong, sweet smells. ie: I don't handle those icky sweet candles well. And many pregnant young women are sensitive to odors... so, in the very near future, I may just pocket my perfume money and have my hair done instead.

  • I read of it but it didn't get much play here. Toooo sad!!! I've been busy dealing (read: trying) with my own drama.

  • This whole airpane thing is really scary since we are on airplanes all the time. I am a gutless traveler.

I have heard that after wearing a scent a long time, people don't notice it anymore, that the brain just ignores it. My husband doesn't want me to wear any scent at all because it bothers him. Oh well.

I'll bet Flo gets such a lovely charge out of winning. :-)

  • Hello to all of Aunt Marianne's online friends... Keep a good thought and say a prayer - Mare broke her leg today and is headed in for surgery in the morning. I know she'll be back to blogging as soon as she can - but keep her (and Flo) in your thoughts and prayers so she has a speedy recovery. Best wishes, her neice Kate

  • Oh my gosh Mare! A broken leg? Surgery?

We'll be waiting patiently to hear from you with more of what Caryn so aptly called "brain darts."

    Best wishes.

  • For those faithful readers of Mare's blog - I just want to let you know that she broke her right femur Monday and she underwent surgery yesterday. She is still in the hospital and is looking at three weeks of rehab. I'm doubtful she will be able to leave her computer for that long, so I'm sure you will be hearing from her soon. If you are the praying kind, please put in a good word for her - and Flo! this is Marianne's friend, Diane...love you, Mare!

  • Sorry Kate - I didn't realize you had already posted something about Marianne's accident - I should have read the comments down to the end! Anyway, I spoke with her this morning and she is as upbeat as she can be given the circumstances....I'm planning to visit her and Flo as soon as I get rid of a nasty head cold - that's the last thing they need....diane
