The material things we take for granted...




One of my favorite inventions is Tivo! In random order are a couple of reasons:



  • the simplicity of recording a show

  • the ability to pause a live show

  • likewise to be able to rewind [a live show] and see something again

  • the joy of zooming through the commercials.

  • I would miss it if it wasn't working!

Then I started thinking about how many other in-house appliances/devices that I would be unhappy about if suddenly I had to find a different way to accomplish the designated task. Think about it! Computer, TV,VCR/DVD, phone, microwave, stove, washer/dryer, refrigerator, dishwasher, toaster, air conditioner, coffeemaker, vacuum cleaner, radio/CD player...etc.


What would you miss most and least of all!

  • my computer is the most used, then probably the stereo and then tv. most of all washer/dryer.

  • Most computer..least...dishwasher. I wash them by hand as I didn't have one for the first 25 years of marriage...

  • I'd be LOST without the internet. all those shows i used to tivo...i now watch online. VERY convenient!

  • A year or so ago, one summer afternoon, we heard the automatic watering system we had recently installed come on to water the pots and bonsai on the patio. We used to spend hours had watering these pots. That morning the lawn and garden had also been automatically watered. No more hoses and sprinklers, or wondering what to do when we wanted to travel.
    At the same time, there was laundry in the washer and dryer, and I'm sure we had run the dishwasher some time that day. We began to think about all the work that was being done for us, while we enjoyed sitting and reading. We even resenting having to get up to empty the dryer and fold the clothes.
    We realized how fortunate we are to live in this era, and to be able to afford such luxuries.
    What would I miss most? Hadr to decide - watering system, TV, computer are high on the list.

  • Well, I guess I'd miss the phone, computer, microwave and certainly the air conditioner.
    I don't have tivo and I don't used the VCR for anything except to play DVD's - I'm VCR handicapped just like some people are map handicapped!

  • I am completely hooked on TiVo for all the same reasons that you shared. Even more, when traveling about my favorites are still being recorded for watching whenever I get around to it.

    I'd really miss the computer too, but that's probably because you can find out nearly anything...it's so handy. I could (and have) done without lots of other conveniences, but they sure are nice.
