It's .....
After seeing the..... it's/its usage.... used incorrectly in 2 professional organizations' letters, I couldn't help myself from trying to help set it straight!!
Simply stated:
If you use...... it's.....
you MUST be able to use the words....'it is' [ or it has] in place of it's.
It's easy.
It is easy.
It's been snowing all day.
It has been snowing all day.[past tense]
The cat ate all of it's food.
The cat ate all of it is food.???
I think my brain has a mind of it is own.?????? [ doesn't make sense]
So, just get in the habit of saying 'it is' when you write 'it's' and you will be correct.
That's what those nuns taught me many years ago...along with
'Always proof read your work one more time' to make sure... its meaning is correctly stated.
[Did you think that should have said..to make sure it's meaning was correctly stated??]
That would make it say...to make sure 'it is' meaning ' is correctly stated.
RECESS!!! Time to play.

English is changing so rapidly these days. They are shortening a lot of words to accommodate texting.

this has always been a tricky one because we are taught to use an apostrophe to show ownership - except NOT in this case.

Thanks for the lesson for the day. I do wish more would read its important message. ;)

Good for you, teacher Mare! This was one rule I know about, but sometimes my brain will do a hiccup and I'll stick the apostrophe when I shouldn't.

I'm always happy to know that someone else is trying to remind people that correct English grammar and punctuation are important to understanding.
Way to go! I hope someone gets the message.
(I have written to companies that have mistakes on their web sites and they are generally grateful.)
