You've Got the Day Off!

Yesterday was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr's celebratory day, and yet unfortunately, there are many who will never see the light. While he is most known for the four words, "I have a dream", I tried very diligently to impress upon my students the powerful words that followed those...that day when people were judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin.
Some people have Martin Luther King's government holiday off, and others do not. Yet, Columbus Day seems to be different somehow. Celebrated for 'discovering America', it is now known that he was a barbarian of sorts...and...I'm thinking that the Native Americans were already here. 'Nuf said.
Perhaps the newly crowned Miss America can lead the cause of being judged by more than your appearance. Aside from being born with her physical beauty, I'm guessing that her musical expertise was the crowning glory.
I have a wish...that people treat each other kindly, slow down and smell the roses, and be a part of returning some sanity to the planet!
Now I am off to teach a safe driving class to help restore some sanity to the highways and the byways. TTFN [ta ta for now].
P.S. I apologize for what appears to be my editorial's blatent sarcasm...I hate sarcasm...I really do.

  • I taught my 1st grade students that Columbus discovered America (named for Vespucci, of course) for Europe, but that it was already discovered and was inhabited by the native people. I also told them that the Scandanavians had already "discovered" America for their countries.

MLK Day was always celebrated with a lot of grade level presentations and songs by the school.

Good for you for bringing sanity to our highways.

  • A day off is a good thing.

I think it sad that so many kids today don't really understand the impact and legacy of Dr. King or his sacrifices.

    I'm glad you're telling them.

  • Whoever discovered America, MLK definitely helped reinvent it.

  • My People always taught that Columbus was not the 1st European to visit. The lore teaches that my Tribe was one of those left behind to watch for the return and invasion to sound the warning. The bulk of them moved west and assumed new names. Our history says this happened long before Columbus was even born.
A little sarcasm is good for the soul.

  • Oh no...and I can be very sarcastic.. it is a family trait.. not a good one either....Thank you for offering to go to a school with me..the thought of it makes me so nervous and then I can pass out if I get too nervous and there is the vomiting... not a good thing, but it seems to have come when I got really ill.....Michelle
