Think...and then think again.
The tragedy that happened on Saturday in Arizona is beyond my comprehension. The fact is that six people are dead and nineteen are injured because one person was able to fire off rounds of bullets from a semi-automatic gun.He bought the gun in November. For what purpose would a private citizen need or use a semi-automatic gun? Hunters wouldn't use it...would they? Seriously, what is the reason they exist?
I have seen the map of Sarah Palin's 20 'cross hair targets' that was intended to show the possible government seats that could be secured while the election campaigns were in progress. The visual that was selected should have been analyzed more care
fully before it was put out there. My point is that everyone needs to think...and pause to think again...how might my actions and/or my words be interpreted by others? Actions speak louder than words, and words are repeated and have consequences. In all aspects...in all conversations...at all events...whether it is personal occasion or conversation, or at a public meeting or sporting event.
Hindsight is 20/20. I cannot get the image of the smiling, cheerful nine year old girl who was killed on a sunny Saturday morning because she was in the wrong place at the wrong time... out of my thoughts.
Let us all be a part of turning the hourglass around.
Speak up when something is unnecessarily offensive or dangerous.
Help stop the insanity...for the children.

Yes, very well said. We need to measure our words and our actions.
It's easy to get caught up in the vitriol and act in a like manner. I must not.

Very well said. Your words here add greater credence to the tragedy because you don't usually write about such things (unlike me who rants frequently) and that in itself tells me .
My own Congressman was targeted on that map and received death threats to him, his family and his staff for voting for the healthcare bill. He was replaced in November by a Tea Party Darling. Sigh.
Thank you, Mare, for a great post!

Hello Mare, good to hear from you today and Happy New Year!
I am also amazed that semi-automatic guns are sold freely over here, but I know a few people who own one. Like you I cannot understand the need for an ordinary citizen to need one, and the Hubster who is unsurprisingly pro-gun, feels the same way. But you will never seperate Americans from their guns and even if they tried, they'd never be able to enforce it.
This was a terrible tragedy, I just hope it also make Americans think again about Sarah Palin, as they are very pro her.

Terrible tragedy. I can only hope that something good comes from it... like a softening of political rhetoric and removal of dangerous guns from the public. I agree completely.

Oh Mare, thank you for this post. You're absolutely right, of course. Perhaps we need to all speak out on this sort of thing more quickly. Wow! Is it 19 people now? I keep hearing different numbers! I'll make a correction on my post.

what's scary now is the protests planned and counter protests for the little girl's funeral because one group doesn't like Catholics and her family is of that faith. How stupid can people get and when will it all end?

So, have you seen that the Westboro Baptist Church plans to picket Christina Taylor Green's funeral because "God hates Catholics?"
It just gets sicker and sicker.....

Well said, Mare. Christina's picture is burned in my brain as well. I used to love politics, but I can't even watch the news anymore bc I just can't stand all the total lack of decent behavior. I'm watching Gods and Generals and was again so totally struck with how much respect and grace people exhibited to each other back then. Gen Lee actually thanked Lincoln for offering him the command of the Union Army! - and then respectfully turned it down. GNSJ

Don't get me started...the ease with which you can buy a gun in some places is crazy.. if you need a gun, you can wait to checked out.. This crazy guy was able to just go and buy his gun and that extended clip... Horrific....
