Survey Said.....
A very interesting conversation over lunch landed on a discussion about 'birth order'. It reminded me of a favorite activity that I used as a prompt in the classroom in the name of a 'writing exercise' as well as a 'get out of your seat, move around, and share your thoughts' theme. Pointing to the four corners of the room: One corner was for 'first born', the second was for 'middle child', the third was for 'the youngest', and the fourth corner was where the 'one of a kind' otherwise known as 'only child' gathered. The students were then to confer with their group as to what they had in common, what they liked and disliked about their 'position' in the family, and lastly, what would be their choice and why... if they were given a voice in the matter. And then they documented it in their writing journal. What a fascinating activity to participate in as well as observe the interactive process. Before I share any results, let me conduct a survey among my blogging friends. Where do you allign in 'birth order', and given the choice...what would you choose?

I am the youngest. It was annoying getting to do everything last when I was little, but now I love it because I'm still younger than my sisters. Ha!

interesting question and assignment. I'm an only child and would have loved to have had at least one other sibling-a brother or sister.

I was the second of seven, mediator between the two sisters closest in age to me, older and younger, and surrogate mother to the little ones.

I'm the first born. I haven't wished to be anything else. I just accepted it. I think I like being first born although I probably am bossier than I should be with my younger brother. He tolerates it quite nicely. I wonder if he'd have preferred being the 1st born. There aren't as many photos of him as a baby, I'm afraid.
This is a terrific project, Mare. I'm looking forward to hearing some of your results. What a great idea for a class project!
Sorry about my previous comment. I was writing too quickly and goofed.

Two siblings before me died at infancy. So, actually I am the first born LIVING child. I like being the oldest, because I got the first of everything -- no hand me downs!

I am the oldest and did not really like it when I was a child. Now I am fine with it, probably because most people think two of my brothers are older. Actually, they are 2 years and 3.5 years younger!! I NEVER correct them!
I also have a sister 5 years younger and another brother 17 years younger.

I am the oldest of five. I didn't like having to share a room with one of my sisters....there were times when I wished I were an only child. My youngest sibling is 15 years younger than me, so it seems like I was almost another mother to her.

Just had a chance to come back to catch up.
I'm the oldest of 5 (sisters 2 and 4 years younger), with brothers 12 and 13 years younger. There was definitely good and bad that came with it. I have wondered from time to time how I may have been different if I weren't the oldest. Never know. Fun post.
