What's Your Line?

This picture is very similar to the layout of the second floor of my house. The room on the right [which looks like there is a light on] is the bathroom and directly across from it is the bedroom. Straight ahead is a small room which was the 'playroom' when we first moved in. Picture that door open, and behind the door is where I stored the [folded up] ironing board. That's the setting. Do you have the visual picture..?
While still teaching, my early morning routine was to go downstairs, get some coffee, and return upstairs to 'wake up' and think about beginning the day. I would watch a bit of the news while I ironed whatever I had decided to wear to school for the day. Then I'd lay the clothes on the bed, and fold up the ironing board to return it to where it was stored...behind the 'playroom door.'
Grasping the ironing board on both sides, I began walking toward/thru the bedroom door. I did not realize that the string that held the cover on had come untied and it had dropped to the floor. So when I walked forward, I managed to step on it...which abruptly stopped the ironing board's progression...I, however, continued going forward, and I literally 'surfed the ironing board' out the door and rode it to the entrance to the bathroom . Thankfully, I managed to get the whole scenario under control without injury aside from the hysterical laughter! I shared at lunch what had happened, it was certainly entertaining, and brought on some hearty laughter!!!
When I think about this, I have to laugh.
I always tell my Safe Driving Classes that they should have ready...a funny story, joke, or memory that brings on a smile for when you get stuck in traffic or at traffic lights. It helps to lower the frustration and the blood pressure when you are feeling stressed.

For me...it's "Surf's up! Grab your board and get going!!!

What's yours?

  • At this moment I can't think of a funny story, though there are many out there. I can assure you though the next time my husband and I find ourselves in a group of people he will remember one of my stunts and announce it to the whole group. Enjoyed your story.

  • What great advice, to have a funny story to remember in times of stress.
I'll have to think if I have one.

  • well let me tell you one. when my last son turned 16 I took him out for his first driving lesson. Being very insecure he wanted to drive on the right side of the road to avoid oncoming traffic. Just as we had started I heard myself scream watch out for the chuckhole-which was on the right side of the hole and which we hit right in the middle. Then as the tire slowly lost air, I tried to not loose it while I calmly explained to my son about chuckholes as I took back the wheel and drove quickly to the tire place. Now I can laugh at this but at the time....

  • What a wonderful wonderful idea. I'll get my stories together, pick out one (or two or three) to have im mind the next time I find myself in a sticky situation.

  • Mare..you asked about the intelligence of crows...

Larry from "The Birder's Report" left this comment. Beautiful shot of the Crow on the snow Michelle. These are very clever birds and they have an amazing capability to recognize people's faces and use tools. I wrote a post on this incredible study done by Kevin McGowan and John Marzluff that I think you will enjoy. Check it out here.

    You won't believe it... Michelle

  • I don't know, Mare... This is truly funny but knowing how we've both broken bones, it was scary, too! I do love how you find joy in everything. It's what will keep you healthy.

  • You know, there is a future for you. You would make a wonderful stand up comic. You don't use foul (fowl) language and I would be able to relate to your stories. I can actually see this happening, early morning many things on your mind, so why not have a little tiny string trip you up and a short ride down the hall. You must have entertained the teachers every day.
Love to you & your mom
