What to do??

All's quiet on the eastern front. Mom is engaged in 'sleep therapy' so that she can get well. The dog is stretched out on the couch next to me, and the cat is stretched out behind the couch...both of them in a post feeding repose. I am watching 'The View' and enjoying the 'piece' of quiet time. [a variation of 'peace' and quiet mode.]
Last night as we were getting ready for bed, suddenly there was a whole lot of shaking going on. That would be Flo 'chillin' as in...perhaps there is a fever in the wings. Yep! When I raised her bed to give her two Tylenol, I hoped that it could be a stress-free event . The first one went down okay, but the second one caused all kinds scary reactions...first to Flo ...which immediately caused my wide-eyed reaction.
"Jesus, Mary, and Joseph!!"
Arms flailin' a bit, resulted in the 2nd Tylenol landing under the dresser.
A note to the people who have some form of company in the house: It is very troubling to be nervous and 'in charge' with no one around to share that worry. It's a familiar corner for me. I joined 'parenting by one' when my son was five years old. I guess that I learned that you don't know how strong you are until that's your only choice. Sink or swim.
Appreciation was penned by my son in 1st [or 2nd grade] when the teacher had each student write something [good, I presume], which was collated and copied to be handed to the moms on Mother's Day. What was my claim to fame?
The title was: My 21st Ear Infection
Details included how 'my mom took me to the emergency room and they gave me medicine for my burning ear pain...otherwise I would have been a dead duck!" Priceless!!
Back to Flo: I used a life line and phoned St Nic. She has a wonderful calming effect on Mom, and I was wishing there was someone standing beside me [other than the dog who was very aware that something wasn't going quite 'normally']. Nic came over to help us. God bless her.
The two of us decided that Flo would sleep better in the living room recliner so that breathing would be easier. This was a manageable manuever thanks to Nic. We got Flo comfortably settled and the couch became my bed. Nic went home, and Flo went into a deep sleep, but there wasn't a whole lot of sleeping going on for me. Not only because there was no way that the couch could compare to my bed, but also due to the fact that something became crystal clear in the darkness of the night. What would that be??
That would be the dog's entertainment of 'cat bowling' whenever the cat entered the room. Followed by the fast and furious roadrunner chase that resulted. Oh yeah! That would be the reason that the dog and cat sleep in separate worlds!!! Okey Dokey! Lesson learned and noted!
Cat and dog: Different Plans Necessary

Other lesson learned: Liquid Tylenol for adults is a blessing.

And finally, since the antibiotic wasn't available in liquid form, the pharmacist indicated that Flo's pill could be crushed and put on a spoon with applesauce. That was an instant flashback to my childhood when Mom would appear with 2 spoons: The first one had a crushed aspirin hidden in applesauce, and the second one was a pure applesauce chaser. Deja Vue[all over again as Yogi Berra would say!]
...the circle of life.

  • I'm glad you have someone you can call for help. That definitely makes a difference. I hope Flo feels better soon (and you can rest).

  • You are a saint, Mare. You were probably a nurse in another lifetime. Your mom is truly blessed to have you caring for her.

  • yes it is a circle and a cycle too. mothering your mother and watching your kids parent their kids. funny at time, frustrating at other times. you sound like a caring nurse. separate that dog and cat though.

  • thats right the applesauce thing works. also, ask if you can crush the pill and mix it in with water. that way if you run out of the liquid stuff you can make your own. just ask the doc.
you learn all kinds of neat tricks in nursing school!

  • Mare;

You always make me smile, sometimes through tears but it's still my favorite emotion.
You are such a good soldier girl.
    You inspire me !
BTW...my two cats used to spend the night running over my face!
    Door is closed now! duh!

  • You are definitely a good daughter!

I think you have a best-selling memoir in you. You have such an ability to tell frightening and heart-rending stories with honesty and humor.

When you are rich and famous, we can say we knew it would happen years ago.

  • When my MIL was dying in a nursing home, she was in a great deal of pain. The nurse gave her Tylenol with apple sauce. I guess that is a common procedure for the elderly.

  • I'm up when I should be sleeping because my back condition is causing leg pain. This is a new and scary development. But, yes, it could be much worse. For one thing I have a loving partner beside me. And for another, give my 10 minutes on my feet and I'll be walking fine - so far.
My heart goes out to you and your mother. Keep using those life lines. You need and deserve support.

  • Oh dear...Poor Flo and Poor Mare. The antibiotics that they put you on can have some strange effects in older people. When you wrote 21st ear infection it reminded me of when I was a single Mom with a 14 month old baby who had constant ear aches and I had no car. It wasn't a fun time but I like you discovered that it can be done alone... Michelle
