Is this a pilot for a sitcom?

Well, now there are two of us using wheelchairs and walkers! We've been trying to work out the logistics of eating, sleeping, and use of the bathroom facilities. And then there's things like feeding the animals, and yes...Grace, the dog, must use the outdoors as her public restroom. How to get her there without walking was an issue. To quote a Beatles' song, "We're getting by with a little help from our friends."

My good friend Debbie stops by my house at 6:30AM on her way to work and lets the dog out, and then back in. She feeds the dog, and the very loud "I haven't been fed in a long time" meowing cat. We chat for 5 minutes, and then Gracie and I return for a little more sleep. The cat's good for a nap, too. At 9AM, St Nic arrives and takes care of Flo. I get my clothes together, and when the wheelchair arrives back to me, I wheel and hop my way through the get dressed routine.
Flo and I have breakfast in dual recliners, and the day begins.

But it is when St. Nic leaves from 2-730PM that the sitcom begins. I am mobile by wheelchair and can get things, and with my handy dandy grabber given to me at rehab...almost anything is possible. For example, my mom's favorite candy: turtles [choc covered caramel and nuts]. Mom's left hand has become quite functional as a dominant hand, and even though her right hand has made great progress, she has difficulty getting those turtles out of their wrappers. So here's the scenario:

Flo gets 2 turtles out of the box. She tosses them on the floor. I get my EZ Grabber and scoop up the turtles. I open the wrapper and toss it from my recliner to her lap. Problem solved!! Teamwork! I am getting pretty darned good at 'Turtle Toss."

And when St Nic asked to leave early to bring her sick puppy to the vet, she packed our lunches and some goodies in a cooler and Flo and I in our respective recliners had an indoor picnic lunch! Kind of fun!

Sister St Matthew in high school Latin class used to say:
Necessity is the mother of invention.
I'll second that!
I'm thinking there will be dancing in my future...all in good time!

  • I love your outlook! You are an inspiration! I'm not sure I would do anywhere near as good as you! I do hope you'll be up and about soon! I have one of those grabber things and even being still on my feet -- more or less, it comes in really handy. Wonderful to have friends, isn't it?

  • You make it sound like an adventure rather than a struggle (although I'm sure there's plenty of those too). Keep healing and laughing...and sharing.

    Thank you.

  • You are one great lady. So funny and multi talented , I see. Those grabbers are pretty great. I have trouble sometimes getting things down from the cabinets in the kitchen. Wha-la piece of cake!

  • You are amazing, Mare! You really do make this all sound like an adventure. I wish everybody could have your outlook on "calamites." It would make for a saner, happier world. I just wish you lived close by so you could always keep me happy.

  • You really are quite the lady and so creative at that! My gosh, I'm so sorry to hear of everything that's happened. Praying for quick healing for you.

On the other hand, you are so funny! This outlook will have you up and about on your own in no time. Turtle tossing, this could get very interesting!

  • OMG this is the funniest post I've read yet. I can totally see this whole turtles toss game. G'ma must be getting quite a good 'turnaround is fair play' laugh out of all this. (Jeremy was great on ESPN the other night - thanks for sharing the timing before it happened...we TiVo'd it. Reilly thinks he is very handsome.) God Bless Nic... and hugs and kisses to both of you. Lots of love. Kate

  • You two do make quite a team. The image I get from your sitcom is I Love Lucy like.
