Hospital Happenings Report #3: It takes all kinds!

(PBP - posted by proxy)

I have a tremendous amount of respect for those special people in the medical field who see your pain and try to do whatever they can to help you….

Like the CNA who looked at me and said, “You look like a shampoo would make you feel better.”
Being the queen of sweat, she didn’t even have to wet my head…just applied the rinseless shampoo, lathered it up, toweled the suds out, and, ‘VOILA’ … a part of my spirit was renewed.

To the nurses who thread the IV’s so that healing additives [like a blood transfusion and/or antibiotic] can begin to heal you, as well as those additives that allow you to relax in ‘altered states’ [my favorite place to be!!] Ah-h-h!!

To the people who tend to bodily functions…yes, those basic bodily functions that you really don’t think about and that you would prefer to do for yourself, and somehow they get it done while doing their best to help preserve your modesty. [A shitty job, for sure!].

To the admitting paperwork ‘doer’ who asked f-o-u-r pages of questions upon my arrival to the floor in order to admit me. Last question :“On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your pain?”….11

To those quiet souls who came on the 11 PM shift and didn’t drag the 3 wooden visitor chairs across the floor as they approached, or flip the stadium lights on and say, “Are you awake?”

To the bandage changers, and blood pressure/temp recorders, especially the light hearted ones. Like the time I had one on each side of my bed, and one said to the other, “You’ve got to watch this one…she reads faces!”

To the deliverers of the flowers that kept coming and coming and coming. They thought I must have been a pretty important person. I told them it was probably a direct [sympathy] response to the ‘unnecessary roughness’ [in the big planbook in the sky] of breakin’ my flippin’ leg while I was already dealing with rheumatoid arthritis and taking care of my 97 year old mom. I mean…come on!!

To the people who take you under their wing, and make you feel like you are theirs to comfort. It’s a beautiful thing.

  • All the good and love that you've poured forth for others has come back to cushion your fall. Well... sort of.

Everybody must recognize how very special you are, Mare! You must be the perfect patient because you keep your sense of humor!

  • It seems so like you to recognize the kindness of others. I imagine that you are/will be one of their favorite patients. A sense of humor during a stressful situation is such a gift.
