Do you believe in magic?
I am watching the Olympics and it really is kinda fun. I enjoy rooting for the home team. Something about it brings people together with a common focus. A brief hiatus in the everyday allegiance of conservative vs liberal, prejudice vs tolerant, religious vs agnostic, environmentalist vs capitalist, paper or plastic, mayo or miracle whip!!
Hah! I had to inject an element of silly to get to my two topics, the first one being the comical one. I was watching the rowing races[I can't think of the real name for this sport], and I found myself [unconsciously] physically leaning toward the finish line in an effort to help our team move ahead of the others. And even after correcting this goofy behavior, I found myself doing it again! I had to really control this behavior during the gymnastics[ balancing on the very top[beam] of the couch is pretty tricky!]Sometimes for a laugh, I would say,"I can do that"
On to my other point...
Am I the only one to see that the emperor has no clothes??
Many contests are subjective in scoring and a 6.5 edges out a 6.49 and that's the way it is. But the swimmer who lost the gold because of .08 difference in time...Come on! I do not believe that a second can be separated into one hundred parts. Think about it...Oops! Your second is gone! I think it is bizarre, and yet it is accepted as the rule.
If you can wrap your brain around a contest being decided by a hundredth of a second, then please contact me because I have some land in Florida for sale!

i agree...everyone who competes is a winner to have gotten that far in their skills whatever the sport is...it was funny watching the chinese male gymnasts so happy with gold then the japanese deflated because they came in with only a silver after the chinese but the americans were exuberant with bronze...loved that. true spirit of sport-celebrate the effort.

I have thought the same thing about tenths of seconds...particularly in basketball games. A fraction of a second? It's crazy but I guess computers can operate in picoseconds now (that's even less than nanoseconds). No wonder time flies.

ohmigosh Aunt Mare! I did EXACTLY the same thing while watching the men's gymnastics on the 'horse'.... while watching them swing their legs around and around while switching right-hand-left-hand-right-hand-left-hand on the grips, I realized that my head and shoulders were ALSO bumping back and forth left-right-left-right-left-right... as IF I could help them swing their legs around the horse and not get stuck!! LOL Love you lots!!! Kate

Picoseconds?? One hundredth of a second?? Who needs that kind of pressure? I say if it'sless than a second, they ought to be awarded dual medals. It should take at least as much time to become a world champion as it does to say the word. Pretty crazy!!
And speaking about crazy... I'm beginning to worry about you. Mare... leaning into the row... balancing on the top of the couch. LOL That's hilarious! Better not let any one catch that on film. You could end up being fed pablum on a funny farm ...
(I know you're teasing about the couch...hope you know I'm teasing about the pablum)

I'm watching swimming right now. I heard earlier that the new swim suits are helping with all the new world records! Technology has increased performance in many ways, and yet as I also heard earlier, the suit doesn't get up at 5:30 to practice. These are dedicated athletes who are so close in skill that hundredths of a second (which I can't wrap my mind around either)separate them. Oh, oh, Katie Hoff did not pull it off.
For some with no chance to medal, just being in the Olympics may be enough, but coming in fourth must be very hard.
