And a second generation brings forth a third generation

Who knows where the time goes? [A Judy Collins song]
And if you could see into the future, would you want to?
Sometimes truth is stranger than fiction.
Anyway, another friend of mine who I met through teaching stopped over today with her daughter and her first GRANDCHILD! And the baby is a grandson - smiling, toothless, with eyes the windows to a beautiful soul.
I can remember back 30 years[ did I say 30 years?]when we were in our twenties, and babies began to join the families. Diane...music teacher/singer with a voice extraordinaire... was pregnant with her first child, and during prep time you could find her sleeping[I mean resting] on the nurse's 'sick kid' cot. That first trimester can really drain the energy out of you and especially if your chosen profession is nonstop herding[ I mean teaching] kids for seven hours a day.
I personally found that a daily ice cream cone could restore the energy needed to get you to the end of the day. I welcomed a ten pound bouncing boy, and she brought forth a rosy, pink little girl. And so, we [along with other friends and their 'lil chillin']kinda watched together as the kids grew up and celebrated life's small[picnics, ballgames, X Files, Les Mis tickets] achievements and also the milestones[ birthdays, graduations, career choices, weddings].
Diane's daughter is a teacher, and now a mother.
They stopped over and Mom[baby whisperer extraordinaire] got to hold him.
I wondered if while holding him, was she momentarily transported back through time to when she held her son.
And so, I say again...'Who knows where the time goes?

Amazing how quickly we can slip back in time, and equally amazing is the number of things that can snap us back there in a blink. But, I can only imagine that holding a grandchild is like no other experience on earth. I get those experiences vicariously, no grands yet.

its the cycle of life. i remember when young a print my grandmother had on her wall of 4 different stages: a young girl, then a young bride, then a mother and finally a grandmother. what a wonderful cycle called life and family if we are blessed with a spouse and children. if not, we can mother other's children-who need all the mothering and grandmothering they can get.

My friend cares for her 96 year old Mom who has some dementia. When a friend stopped over with a grandbaby, her Mom lit up and talked a bit...amazing what babies can do..

One of my favortie children's books is called, "Wilford, Gordon, McDonald, Partridge". It's the most delightful tale of a young boy who makes friends with an elderly lady in a nursing home who had lost her memory. So, he decided he was going to take her presents that would help her to find it. It's a sweet story, indeed!
I think time, and the memories attached, goes deep into the recesses of our souls. When we need a safe place to hide from a world that becomes frightening, we can take refuge among the shells gathered at the seashore when we were three... the first kiss on our cheek given by a boy at the water fountain when we were nine... the note our daddy left on our dresser telling us he was proud of us on our wedding day... the tiny fists that grabbed our finger as our first baby tossed his head back and forth learning to suckle... birthday balloons, boy scout uniforms, prom dresses, so much joy, so manytears... and then... a new cylce began.
Everyones memories of the times of their lives are different. But, the time never goes far...
At least, that's my guess....

Wouldn't it be great if every new mother could have a baby whisperer near by? I know I could have used one.
Ah, yes. Memories.

This is such a wonderful post and your photo is a tender, very touching image. Your mom must have been remembering all the love she's given and received.
