Go Ahead: Make My Day!!
It really wasn't really that big of a deal...except to Flo[my 96 year old mom]. And I made her so very happy by...
I occasionally channel surf during commercial breaks and found myself stopping at the QVC Shopping site. They were advertising Rockport leather sandals, and it definitely caught Mom's attention. Since her stroke, she has been in sneakers and crocs most of the time.
"I used to have sandals like that...at my house."
I knew the exact pair she was thinking about and said, "You still do!! I can put my hands on them right now if you'd like."
"You can?" Really??
Now, these shoes were from her house[ that we had to wrap up and move her out of in a short amount of time], stored in boxes in my brother's garage, brought to my house in Central NY, to my garage, and then upstairs in the spare room[for the winter].
So, up the stairs I go, and not only did I locate the navy blue sandals, but also her favorite blue/white gingham shorts and matching shirt. First I must relate that Mom doesn't wear shorts, but these are knee length, and loved so much that when the waistband wore out...she had it replaced!![Have you ever hung onto an article of clothing because you absolutely loved it for some reason?]
I come down the stairs with her favorite navy blue sandals and the shorts set.
You would have thought that I did the impossible, and her face was the picture of happiness and awe.
We put the shoes on her feet, and all was well with the world!
Well, then we had to go out.
We went to get a hot dog and an ice cream cone, and since the hot dog needed time to cook, we got the ice cream first and ate it while we waited for the hot dog.
"In 96 years- I have never done this before today! Eat dessert first!!"
"There is a saying: Life is uncertain. Eat dessert first," I told her.
"You are amazing!"
We finished eating, and went for a little ride[the whole time she is looking at those navy blue sandals on her feet.]
When you put that all together- and what have you got? Bippity-boppity-boo!
Nope, just the realization that sometimes it doesn't take a lot to make someone's day.
I do believe that I may have achieved 'Walk on Water' status!!

Mare..that is such a lovely story. My best friend cares for her 96 year old Mother at home and has for the past 8 years while she works as a teacher. Her Mom isn't very sharp anymore and it's hard on my friend. But how great when we can give something back to out parents as they gave to us..

Awww Mare... This just warmed my heart and made me tear up. It's so beautiful. You're wonderful.
About the linking thing you asked about. I had to play with this to learn how to do it, too. You go to New Post. When you get to that page, you highlight the name that you want you link. Then you click onto those double circles which stands for link. When you click on that link icon, you can put in the http:// address. And voila, you have it. I remember when I first managed to do it, I was so excited.

Your story touches me. I think I'd better call my mother.
My mother is 86 and still lives on her own 200 miles from me. She is losing her hearing, her eyesight and her mobility, but still
"helps" at the senior center every week.
Mom loves sweet peas, and when I visited her during the summer the last two years, I have taken her a bouquet of sweet peas from my garden. It was a reward just to have the fragrance in the car all that way, but giving them to her made her day, and then mine as well.
Well done, Mare

What a lovely story. It reminds me of my mother who developed senile dementia very suddenly when she was 76, and she went down hill very quickly. She hadn't eaten chocolate for years because she had been told not to by her doctor for some reason. She had a sudden fancy for some and the look on her face when she ate a piece was a joy. It didn't seem to do her any harm either. I've just found your blog via Kay at Musings, and will definitely visit again. Us retired teachers need to stick together!

What a great story. What a great picture of your mom. And what a great daughter you are...
I would give half of what I own to be able take my mom out for a hot dog and some ice cream, to do one more thing to bring a giggly "tee hee" and some pleasure into her life.
You brought your mom her favorite shoes, many of us some sweet recollections of our own mothers, and yourself a beautiful memory to cling to when those shoes lay empty on the floor.
It was a good day!
