Hummingbird Charades

My mom, brother, and I have been watching the hummingbird feeder that is attached to the picture window, and it is a busy, busy spot!! They are so small that it is amazing to me how these birds can migrate such a distance. This morning, one of them hovered mid-air looking directly at me moving ever so slightly as it moved in front of each of the 9 [tic-tac-toe ] window panes for about 20 seconds. Awesome!
The very old joke that goes:
You know why they're called hummingbirds?
Because they forgot the words! [Groan..nn]
Picture me facing this 'lil bird saying, "What's the matter girl? Is Timmy in the well?"
So...thinking that maybe some new sweetened water was the message, I cleaned their feeder and changed the water. I will miss the hummers.
Too bad the squirrels don't migrate!!
On to the good news...
It has been a tremendoulsy sweet year for peaches. The bestest of the best! I even snuck a bag of 'country farmer's market peaches' into my visiting brother's car when he wasn't looking for a juicy surprise after that 5 hour drive.
And, I am pleased to announce that....
At last...there is a bud on the gardenia plant that we have been nurturing all season. Wahoo! I hope it blooms. It looks pretty healthy! It is Flo's favorite, and we've been impatiently giving that plant some 'not so subliminal messages' to 'FLOWER' ...COME ON...FLOWER!
And finally...
On this Labor Day weekend, I would like to thank all of the many, varied, and unusual laborers who help us in various ways. Farmers, nurses, medics, secretaries, scientists, plumbers, electricians, construction workers, trash collectors, comedians, song writers, dancers, [good news] reporters, politicians [who are working for the general good and not their own personal pension], fire wo/men, police officers, cooks, teachers, title searchers, caretakers, our military and their families,
veterinarians, volunteers.... The Geek Squad!!!
Any other 'laborers' that you would add to my general list whose work you would miss?

  • Hummingbirds are such amazing creatures. Their speed and "tiny-ness" fill me with awe. Have a great Labor Day. I think there are too many laborers out there to thank personally, so I'm just grateful for everyone who provides a service.

  • I wish we had hummingbirds in Hawaii. I saw a couple in the 35 years that we lived in Illinois. Or maybe it was just a giant bee?

Art was just talking about freshly picked peaches from a friend's home a long, long time ago and how amazing it was. It's made me want to have some. Your brother will be so happy!

Took that pill a 3rd time this morning... with the straw and down it went. Wahoo! Thank you, thank you!

  • We have some hummers year round here. We don't have feeders, but they find all of the flowers available.

  • Mare...thanks for feeding the hummers....they are neat to watch. This has been a great year for peaches..I wish I knew what to do with them besides just eating them plain....

Dragons and damsels don't bite or buzz or bother anything other than the insects they prey on..which is a good thing....Michelle
