This one's for Chuck!

Physical Therapy is still a 'happening thing' in the process of exercising my right knee back to reality. I've gone from three visits a week to two visits a week, and the physical therapist is great. The time flies by as she gives a directive, and we chat the whole time that I am following her plan to rehabilitate my right knee. I was sharing with her that my brother had been up for the weekend and it had been a nice visit...except for my living room furniture. My couch and chair are recliners which are not the easiest chairs from which to stand up...out of the sitting position and up on your feet! As Paul likes to demonstrate in quite the theatrical way, "It's like trying to get out of a peach basket."
So, my 'PT' buddie offered an extra chair of hers, and if I wanted it, it was mine. Yesterday, as she walked in, she told me that her husband was on his way over with the chair on the pickup truck. As he put the chair through the door, and there was snow-white stuffing popping out of the top of the chair..she raised her voice a bit and asked,"What happened??"
"It fell off the back of the truck."
"Oh, great!" she says.
"It happened kind of fast. There was nothing I could do. Thank God there was not a car behind me."

In an effort to bring some levity into the situation, I reminised about the time that my good friend, Chuck, enlisted help in moving a piano to his house. At last, his wife was going to get a piano. It had always been on her wish list, and one day she encountered a situation where if she moved it, she could have it. The piano- moving posse of 4 strong men hoisted the prized piece of musical furniture onto the truck and set out on the 20 minute ride. All was going well until the curve ...which also happened to be an incline...and some scientific force took over, and just like a Laurel and Hardy moment...the piano flew off of the truck. Some very loud keyboard sounds hit the ground, and those were its last sounds. It broke up into many pieces. As did the four guys, I'm sure!!
Can you imagine the scenario that occurred when he arrived home[by himself...no need for the other three to witness the response to], "So, Where's the piano?"
"Back on Half Acre Road. It didn't make it up the curve."
"Are you serious???"
"I am sorry to say...affirmative!!"
"And grateful to be on a country road with no one behind me."

It became one of those stories that was funny in retrospect. At least that was what I said to the couple [on my porch] arguing about the chair that dove off the back of a truck.
Pointless to discuss it further...it wasn't going to bring it back....isn't that right, Chuck?

  • OMG, what a funny story. I laughed at this one. Is the chair mendable?

  • Yes, fortunately it only had a couple of spots needing a needle and some thread.

  • I wish unfortunate things like this weren't so funny. At least to those of us who aren't the ones suffering the loss. But, for whatever reason, they are.

A piano is no small thing to have destroyed... not to mention Chuck's wifes hopes of owning one.

And yet, I laugh.... Maybe it's just your good story telling. Yeah, that's it. I'm sure I don't have a mean streak...

  • I have so many reactions to this story. Most of them are "Oh, No's". An unsecured load can get you in big trouble here after a woman was maimed for life when she was hit by a bookcase. Piano movers are professionals. I guess we know why we pay them to do it. But I'm also amazed that your therapist would offer, and deliver, a chair! I don't have that kind of a relationship with my PT.
    Quite a story.

  • Oh my, how horrible. Glad you could fix it. As for the piano what an expensive mistake. Oh dear imagine how that woman felt and the guys in the truck. Hope they were insured.

  • Thank goodness the chair could be mended. Your PT is really a "peach" to have given you the chair. That's because you're a model patient, Mare. Gosh! It's rather nice to be mending along with you.

  • Going from three visits a week to two visits a week does sound like progress. I'm happy to hear it! I also hope you continue to improve really fast.

    Have a great week!

  • Congrats on the PT progress. It's a big chunk of time out of the day so going down a day has to be a plus. And what a nice therapist you have! Enjoy the chair.

  • Mare,
I wish I could have seen it!
Similar thing happened to me when I was returning some tables to my sister's house. Only a few blocks, so we didn't tie them. Just laid then in the back of my suv with the hatch open. Drove very slowly. Stopped at a blinking light and when I started to go...out went the tables, right in the middle of the intersection! Lucky for me, someone stopped to help!

  • Ok, Mare. This story still upsets me...sorry to say. Although Chuck likes to tell it, I can't stand to hear it. I wanted the piano for our daughter so she could take lessons because I never had the opportunity. When we moved, we were able to buy her a keyboard and she took lessons. Now she has a beautiful keyboard her husband bought her and she still practices. So it all turned out fine in the end and I got what I wanted...just not the way I thought it would be. LOL.
